Difference Between Oral Liquid and Solid Dosage Forms

We all are aware from the word syrups. Generally, people thought that syrups only exists in liquid form but they are also available in dried powder mixture form or dried granules mixture form, which need to water addition at the time of consumption. Mostly antibiotics are formulated in the form of dry syrups.


Dosage forms like dry syrups are more preferable for the types of drugs, which are unstable in the presence of vehicle like water. So, they are formulated in the form of dry syrups and reconstituted at the time of administration only.


Dry syrups contain other excipients also along with the drugs like colouring agents, flavoring agents, sweetening agents, suspending agents, preservatives and stabilizing agents. Colour and flavor along with sweeteners are very essential components of dry syrups because it mostly prepared for patients belongs to children group.


Difference Between Oral Liquid and Solid Dosage Forms

  • Oral Liquid dosage forms have fast absorption as compared to solid dosage forms, as they don’t need to disintegrate before absorption.

  • Oral liquid dosage forms are more preferable for paediatric patients as they are unable to swallow a whole tablet or capsule.

  • Oral liquid dosage forms are also preferred by gaediatric patients as they also feel difficulties in swallowing oral solid dosage forms.
